Director’s Note

“Always winter and never Christmas”

Imagine that. Bleak, cold, isolating…this is the scene at the top of the play. Unlike other holiday plays that end with a joyful snowfall, the snow in Narnia is stifling. It is oppressive. Yet there is still life. There is still magic. There is hope and promise. There is a world through the wardrobe.

In London, the year is 1940. Peter, Susan, Edmund & Lucy Pevensie are sent to the English countryside to avoid The Blitz attacks of World War II. Though Robinette’s dramatization of the story does not emphasize this, it is an important backdrop. While the children are sent away from the war in London…something much too dangerous for a child…the children find themselves in Narnia, a different land under siege by a different evil regime. However, instead of being sent away, they are brought in to do something that they themselves were meant to do. But they are not alone. There is an array of helpful creatures and of course the great Aslan who is “on the move!”

“Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.” ~C. S. Lewis

I love this story. It has all of the elements of a good adventure…discovery, danger, betrayal, friendship, magic and love. So often we reserve the fantasy realm (particularly in the theatre) for children, but a good story speaks to the human spirit.

On growing up C. S. Lewis says…

“But who in his right mind would not keep if he could that tireless curiosity, that intensity of imagination, that faculty of suspending belief, that unspoiled attitude, that readiness to wonder, to pity, to admire?”

The brilliance of wonder, adventure of curiosity and simplicity of faith is something that children so often are experts in. Though, as we adults know, it can fade with age. Through his story, Lewis invites grown-ups back to their former selves. Back through the wardrobe to wonder, imagine and play. He also calls on people (children too!), inviting us to be brave, to care for others and stand up for what is good no matter the cost.

So, wherever you find yourself today, sit back and let the magic of theatre do its work. Step through the wardrobe with us. May we all experience it with child-like wonder and hopeful eyes.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!

~Cora Hemphill

A proud father of four and grandfather of three, Lou lives by his motto “Forget the past, focus on the present, and enjoy every moment!”

  • Benji is thrilled to be working with Firebox Theatre Company and the entire cast and crew of this magical production, particularly her army of loyal ogres, cruels and hags! Benji was last seen as Judy in Vixen Theatre Company’s inaugural production of A Kid Like Jake. Other favorites roles include Mrs. Peacock in Clue with Cary Players, Nurse in Romeo and Juliet with SweetTea Shakespeare and Lady MacBeth in Bare Theatre’s production of the “Scottish Play”.  Much love to her amazing (husband!), Robo, and (now four!) kids.

  • Emily is delighted to be performing with Firebox Theater in Downtown Wake Forest, a place that holds a lot of memories and special meaning for her (her freshman year homecoming dance was held in this room, and she used to shop downstairs every weekend with her friends in The Cotton Company after lunching at Las Margaritas). Her favorite roles include Cecily from The Importance of Being Earnest and Marianne from Sense and Sensibility. When not on stage or in front of the camera, she’s most likely traveling with her husband, writing her own play, reading Vogue, or sipping a cocktail.

His other recent credits include A Few Good Men (Downey) at the Justice Theater Project, Romeo and Juliet (Benvolio) with Stone Soup, and Firebox's own The Foreigner as Ellard.
